What would it mean to this movement of the 99% if women housekeepers were to to join us: Reflections on Occupy LA, Wall St. and Bel Air

By Paulina Gonzalez

I pushed my way to the center of the circle, at 5’1 this was the only chance I would have to see and hear and to be seen and be heard.  I took a deep breath added my name to the stack and waited for my turn to speak among this group made up mostly of men.  The group had formed from the Occupy LA General Assembly, it consisted of people who had blocked a proposal to endorse a civil disobedience action by dozens of hotel workers.  These workers had planned a protest with their union because they had been fired by a hotel in Bel Air.  This small group now held this proposal in the palm of their hands.  The group also consisted of anybody else from the General Assembly who wished to join in on the discussion....

Why I support Occupy the Hood by Lorenzo Kom'boa Ervin

Quote:

The new mass movement, Occupy Wall Street, has already birthed a number of movement of oppressed peoples of color:Indigenous/African/Carribbean, etc. They are DeColonize OWS, the People of Color Working Group, and Occupy the Hood. It is Occupy the Hood, which is an actual Black working class political tendency, which has the most promise as far as Africans in America are concerned. They are not only trying to pressure the white majority to make a place the for voices of Black/POC people, but also organzing an independent tendency which can organize inour communities around issues effecting us especially. it is that latter dimension which really excites me.

..........

Occupy the hood is that movement best situated to make that hapen in this period. They are part of the Wall Street tendency, and can unite with other POC tendencies and even anti-racist/anti-colonial whites to wage an internal battle inside OWS to make it accountable to POC's instead of just white middle class workers who have lost their jobs, homes, or money in this period. We have suffered far worse.

Over 1 million Black/POC people are in the prison system, which destroys not just the prisoner but his family and community. We have the highest levels of unemployment in the USA, "officially" 16.7%, but actually far higher at Great Depression levels of 26%. We have the highest number of urban homeless. We have record levels of infant mortality, approaching the 3rd world. On and on we are catching hell more than anybody, and we are the class of surplus labor that all economists speak of who have considered the matter.

But we need to organize, not not just bemoan our fate or curse our luck. We can change everything with our all-out struggle, on our own terms. We do not have to be shackled by the racism and backwardness of white workers. Through a movement like Occupy the Hood, we can orgnize not only our own communities, but through that organize the world who would unite with our struggle. So, to end this, I see the
potential of this movement more than anything else to come along in the hip hop era. They seem to "get it", and understand instinctively that they can organize their peoples to not only destroy Wall Street, which is based on our slavery and exploitation, but the entire system of capitalist oppression.

Argentina to Wall Street: Latin American Social Movements and the Occupation of Everything

Massive buildings tower over Wall Street, making the sidewalks feel like valleys in an urban mountain range. The incense, drum beats and chants of Occupy Wall Street echo down New York City’s financial district from Liberty Plaza, where thousands of activists have converged to protest economic injustice and fight for a better world.

As unemployment and poverty in the US reaches record levels, the protest is catching on, with hundreds of parallel occupations sprouting up across the country. It was a similar disparity in economic and political power that led people to the streets in the Arab Spring, and in Wisconsin, Greece, Spain and London. Occupy Wall Street is part of this global revolt. This new movement in the US also shares much in common with uprisings in another part of the world: Latin America.

This report from Liberty Plaza connects tactics and philosophies surrounding the Occupy Wall Street movement with similar movements in Latin America, from the popular assemblies and occupation of factories during Argentina’s economic crisis in 2001-2002, to grassroots struggles for land in Brazil....

How To Hold Your Ground

Starting at midnight through tomorrow morning, we will hold our ground against police aggression and assert the right of the people to peaceful assembly. The following are links to resources on using nonviolent tactics to defend Liberty Plaza.

Basic Strategy: Sit down, link arms and do not let go! If the police drag you away, you can comply or go limp (both calmly and silently) which is arguably not resisting arrest. Please also respect a diversity of tactics.

For those of you who plan to stick around PAST MIDNIGHT—which we hope will be all of you—make sure you understand the possible consequences. Be prepared to not get much sleep. Be prepared for possible arrest. Make sure your items are together and ready to go (or already out of the park.) We are pursuing all possible strategies; this is a message of solidarity.

#OWS VICTORY: The people have prevailed, gear up for global day of action

Posted Oct. 14, 2011, 8:51 a.m. EST by OccupyWallSt

People power triumphs over Wall Street’s bid to end the protests mayor bloomberg and Brookfield Inc. back down on eviction world prepares for day of action Saturday October 15 in 950+ cities in 82 countries. We Are Winning!

NEW YORK, NY – Over 3,000 people gathered at Liberty Plaza in the pre-dawn hours this morning to defend the peaceful Occupation near Wall Street. The crowd cheered at the news that multinational real estate firm Brookfield Properties will postpone its so-called “cleanup” of the park and that Mayor Bloomberg has told the NYPD to stand down on orders to remove protesters. On the eve of the October 15 global day of action against Wall Street greed, this development has emboldened the movement and sent a clear message that the power of the people has prevailed against Wall Street....

Slumberjack

On the topic of holding ground against the inevitable police aggression, one has to wonder how this is to be accomplished in the Canadian context. Will local organizers fire off the usual barrage of 'after the fact' complaints to the same authorities who will send the police battalions out to pepper spray, beat and arrest the demonstrators? Will organizers advise citizens of all age groups who are contemplating attendance, to come prepared to defend themselves against the arbitrary violence of the corporate police? Will the mass assaults and arrests of unarmed protesters on their own streets send the unions and the usual political opportunists scurrying for cover? Will the youth once again be left to lick their wounds in the makeshift cages of the security state?  For the time being at least, the answers are self evident given the last 20 years of 'organized' protest.

M. Spector M. Spector's picture

The visible presence and support of Canada's official opizishin party at the protests would go a long way towards preventing them from being isolated and defeated by police repression.

The abandonment of social activism by the NDP, however, leaves the #Occupy movement vulnerable and rudderless - an easy target for repressive measures.

Agreed - I'd love to see some MPs standing in solidarity with the Occupy Canada movement. By the way, Harper gave a press conference this morning reminding viewers that Canada is not the USA. Totally different and better regulated banking system. He doesn't get it.

M. Spector M. Spector's picture

Quote:
The frustration seen in the protests on Wall Street over the past few weeks demonstrates a widespread and growing citizen discontent with the two political parties in Washington, D.C. and with a political system that is dominated by corporate interests.

It is time for citizens to push their elected officials to break the corporate stranglehold on our economy. Congress should start by enacting a financial speculation tax that would help curb the wheeling and dealing on Wall Street and that could raise hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue to help with the our country's economic recovery.

Congress has done more to bail out Wall Street than Main Street. Wall Street crooks have avoided penalties and prosecution and continued to receive bonuses and excessive compensation while pensions and savings have been looted.

Wages have remained stagnant while the largest corporations and executives have seen record profits and bonuses year after year. Congress has done little in the face of a staggering - and growing - income inequality in this country, where the top 1 percent of the population has financial wealth equal to the combined financial wealth of the bottom 95 percent of the people.

And Congress has done nothing either to disclose or stem the flow of millions of corporate dollars into the electoral process. Corporate Political Action Committees are corrupting the electoral process and blocking the voices and concerns of millions of people.

These are not the signs of a healthy democracy. Those taking part in the "Occupy Wall Street" protests and in similar protests cropping up across the country are working hard to make their voices heard. It is way overdue for the President and Congress to listen.

You won't hear Canadian politicians saying things like the above at tomorrow's #Occupy rallies.

These are the words of [url=http://www.marketwatch.com/story/consumer-advocate-ralph-nader-encourage... Nader[/url], the guy Canadian social democrats love to hate because he habitually undermines the efforts of the Democratic Party to completely co-opt the USian left.

Nader himself is a social-democrat, but he's too left wing for the Canadian social-democratic apologentsia, which prefers not to ruffle the establishment's feathers by actually doing something as bold as marching in the street to demand that the rich pay for their own financial crisis.

I don't think the occupy movement is interested in being co-opted by politicians , unless they also boycotted parliament or some other action indicating something other than 'business as usual'.
All politicians have a stake in the status quo. KOccupy' is about changing the status quo, about the majority of the people confronting the corrupted systems that support the continued and increasing flow of money to the wealthiest 1% of the population. All politicians are part of that system. I don't believe it is their place to attempt to be part of a movement that seeks to change the system from outside.
If politicians gain strength from the occupy movement to stand up more and work for change within the system, like Obama seems to be doing, that's great. However, the occupy movement cannot be constrained by what politicians feel they can do within the system.

Easy to sit and criticize, MSpector.
I'm interested in observing how the 'one demand' idea works out. I've already learned a lot from watching/listening/reading about these millennial youth with their loose but structured democracy that astutely avoids hierarchical leadership and at the same time is well organized and effective without someone dictating what 'should' be done.
.The union movement is 'democratic' in the same way as our governments are - ie, representative democracy where those who speak for us also make decisions for us. Occupy is specifically NOT representative 'democracy' but participatory or participant democracy where all power for decision-making remains with the people, thus the 'General Assembly' twice a day. They may appoint spokespeople to communicate their consensus decisions and bring feedback/input/issues back to the Assembly, but those spokespeople do not make decisions/deals/agreements for the people. Only the Assembly can make decisions and all policies are formed by the whole group, not 'leaders'.
It's a 'new' model to those of us familiar with 'organizing', but the oldest form of democracy in the world, practiced by traditional Indigenous Councils.

If we observe and learn, instead of criticizing what is 'different' from our old way, we stand to be a more effective movement, imo.

One word that comes to my mind is 'decolonize'. :)

Dante’s inferno: massive riots in Rome — pictures and videos

200,000 peaceful protesters march on Rome, but an army of riot police and a small militia of anti-capitalist urban guerrillas wreak havoc across the city.

As the European debt crisis spills over from Greece to Italy, so do the flames of indignation spread from Athens to Rome. On Saturday, the Italian capital was the theater to a spectacular 200,000-strong peaceful anti-austerity march. But a small minority of dedicated militants turned their sights on the authorities. Violent clashes broke out that led to at least 100 injuries and countless torched police vans and cars, broken shop windows and unearthed cobble stones....

I find very little research in their articles

This article by Mr. Chossudovsky, contains "citations" to other articles on the same subject by.... wait for it... Mr. Chossudovsky. These articles, in turn, contain citations to other articles by Mr. Chossudovsky

That's not scholarship.

Mr. Chossudovski also provides links to articles in support of his arguments which arent actually the articles he means to link to.

The first error is lightweight, all the more so because, while he may start his articles with a couple of ominous quotes, he's too slip shod to provide a reasoned case to back up his opening statements. Refering people over to another poorly written and researched article by himself is laughable. The second is just sloppy. Forgive me for stating that the combo of the two makes him look like a very big flake.

See this citation which actually links to an article about Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream

"Governments, too, have been significant financiers of protest groups. The European Commission, for example, funded two groups who mobilised large numbers of people to protest at EU summits at Gothenburg and Nice. Britain's national lottery, which is overseen by the government, helped fund a group at the heart of the British contingent at both protests." (James Harding, Counter-capitalism, FT.com, October 15 2001)

howeird beale

Also, he makes fallacious errors of logic which actually serve to discredit an exceptionally urgent subject: how state and corporate actors seek to undermine and infiltrate dissent.

His arguments seem to run like so:

a.) the CIA has decided that Stephen Harper's tories are a hostile regime. {yes, I'm being facetious}

b.) there are domestic groups within Canada which oppose Stephen Harper's tory regime

c.) the CIA attempts to meet and assist said dissident groups as this may assist their own purposes

ergo, because of a, b and c, the CIA creates and controls all dissent in Canada, therefore all dissent in Canada is artificial, therefore we can return to our natural proclivity of sitting on our backsides and doing absolutely nothing.
