In the West Bank, no bombs are falling, no tanks are rolling and apparently the economy is far better than in Gaza. Sounds better to me

The bulldozers continue to roll, territory keeps getting gobbled up, evictions are proceeding apace, the citizenry is walled off in every direction, and the movement of people is severely hampered by heavily armed Israeli checkpoints, barbed wire and daily humiliation as a routine.  All you have going for you over there is not 'better,' but just another version of a concentration camp, like Gaza.  Theresienstadt was dressed up and presented as a 'better' place as well.  At every turn it seems you assholes have taken up with some of the worst examples Europe could provide in order to extract new service from old lies.

This article by Nick Kristof in the New York Times makes a lot of sense

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/20/opinion/sunday/nicholas-kristof-whos-r...

Israeli leaders, starting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, think that the way to protect their citizens is to invade Gaza and blow up tunnels — and, if Gazan civilians and children die, that’s sad but inevitable. And some Gazans think that they’re already in an open-air prison, suffocating under the Israeli embargo, and the only way to achieve change is fire rockets — and if some Israeli children die, that’s too bad, but 100 times as many Palestinian children are dying already.

In fact, we’ve seen this movie before: Israel responded to aggression by invading Lebanon in 1982 and 2006, and Gaza in 2008; each time, hawks cheered. Yet each invasion in retrospect accomplished at best temporary military gains while killing large numbers of innocents; they didn’t solve any problems.

Likewise, Palestinian militancy has accomplished nothing but increasing the misery of the Palestinian people. If Palestinians instead turned more to hugeGandhi-style nonviolence resistance campaigns, the resulting videos would reverberate around the world and Palestine would achieve statehood and freedom.

Some Palestinians understand this and are trying this strategy, but too many define nonviolence to include rock-throwing. No, that doesn’t cut it.

Israel Grants First Golan Heights Oil Drilling License To Dick Cheney-Linked Company

Israel has granted a U.S. company the first license to explore for oil and gas in the occupied Golan Heights, John Reed of the Financial Times reports.

A local subsidiary of the New York-listed company Genie Energy — which is advised by former vice president Dick Cheney and whose shareholders include Jacob Rothschild and Rupert Murdoch — will now have exclusive rights to a 153-square mile radius in the southern part of the Golan Heights.

That geographic location will likely prove controversial. Israel seized the Golan Heights in the Six-Day War in 1967 and annexed the territory in 1981. Its administration of the area — which is not recognized by international law — has been mostly peaceful until the Syrian civil war broke out 23 months ago.

"This action is mostly political – it’s an attempt to deepen Israeli commitment to the occupied Golan Heights," Israeli political analyst Yaron Ezrahi told FT. "The timing is directly related to the fact that the Syrian government is dealing with violence and chaos and is not free to deal with this problem.”.....

Breaking: In Latest Attack on Gaza Medical Site, IDF Shells al-Aqsa Hospital; 5 Dead, Dozens Hurt

video or transcript

In breaking news from the Gaza Strip, at least five people were killed today and dozens wounded when the Israeli military shelled the al-Aqsa Hospital. It is at least the third Israeli military attack on a Gaza hospital since the ground invasion on Thursday. Speaking from Gaza’s overrun al-Shifa Hospital, Norwegian doctor Mads Gilbert accuses Israel of directly targeting medical facilities. Gilbert helped treat many of the victims of Israel’s attack on the Shejaiya neighborhood, where 72 people were killed. We also speak with Democracy Now! correspondent Sharif Abdel Kouddous, reporting from Gaza City.

Obviously, it would be difficult, if not impossible, that given the long standing deprivations imposed by the Israeli guards, and the resulting psychological effects upon the inmates of the Gaza Concentration Camp, to count on every last one of them to observe and self police such an undertaking.  Within the Warsaw Ghetto for example, there were many individual acts of impromptu resistance borne out of desperation, that were not necessarily approved of by the leadership, and understandably so when considering the occupiers penchant for horrific acts of collective punishment.  In that situation, for an observer to have placed the blame on individuals or groups who are under confinement for the violence and restrictions inflicted upon them in the first instance would merely add to an already macabre and impossible situation, which as we know today is the logic of genocidal maniacs.

Stockholm

I think Gwynne Dyer hits the nail on the head here

http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/editorials/2014/07/17/gaza-viole...

"Hamas’ motive for wanting a little war is more obvious and urgent: It has lost almost all of its sources of funding.

Iran stopped funding its budget to the tune of $20 million per month when Hamas sided with the Sunni rebels in the Syrian civil war. Egypt stopped helping it after last year’s military coup against Mohamed Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood government, and closed the tunnels under the border through which the Gaza Strip received most of its imported goods. Those imports were Hamas’ main source of tax revenue. Hamas is broke, and if it stays broke, its control over the Strip will weaken.

Whereas a war with Israel will rally the local Palestinians to its support, and if enough of them are killed, Egypt and the Gulf states may feel compelled to give Hamas financial aid.

So the only real question is how many dead Palestinians will satisfy both Netanyahu’s need to look tough and Hamas’s need to rebuild popular support at home and get financial help from abroad."

Of course the leaders of Hamas are holed up in a luxury compound in Qatar far away from the danger where they can launch their rockets by remote control in safety...they aren't exactly doing what Churchill, King George and Queen Elizabeth did during the London Blitz (ie: staying in London and personally getting involved in civil defence and displaying of solidarity with their own people under attack)?

Stockholm

The "inmates" in Gaza may be desperate - but they are not calling the shots - the decisions to fire rockets are being made by Hamas leaders living in cushy palaces in Qatar who see this as a game of 3-dimensional chess. I guess you didn't bother to read what Dyer had to say about Netanyahu's motive's for wanting conflict:

"why would Netanyahu be willing to launch Israel’s third war against the Gaza Strip in eight years? Because the nature of his political alliances with other parties on the Israeli right, and especially with the settler lobby, means that he could not make a peace deal that the Palestinians would accept even if he wanted to (which he probably doesn’t).

That’s why he was instrumental in sabotaging the Oslo Accords, the theoretical basis for a peaceful “two-state solution” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, during his first term as prime minister in 1996-99. Back in power in the past five years, his primary excuse for not moving on negotiations has been that Abbas could not deliver peace because he controlled only the West Bank, while the intransigent Hamas ruled the Gaza Strip.

Netanyahu knows, on the evidence of the previous two wars, that Hamas can be battered into temporary quiescence but not destroyed. He also probably realizes that if he did manage to destroy Hamas, its place would be taken by a less corrupt and much more extreme Islamist outfit that might really hurt Israel. He is just doing this, with no expectation of victory, because Israeli public opinion demands it."

As you may know, when the Germans entered Poland in 1939 all traces of leadership and intellegentisa had been already marked for death.  Many fled the country to try and conduct their affairs in exile.  The Nazi occupiers didn't want a leadership cadre that could galvanize resistance to the order that they presided over, which was one where the citizens not to be annihilated outright were to be enslaved into the service of the Reich.  Israel has a well documented track record of assassinating leaders in Gaza, and with drone warfare so commonplace these days to the point where death can rain down instantly and without warning at any second of the day, it would be impossible for any person to openly declare themselves as leaders and still live in Gaza.  We can note in the Israeli context that among the first things to go up in a fireball when conflict is re-initiated are schools and hospitals, which the Israelis consider too much of a priviledge bestowed upon the inmates, which simply can't be tolerated whenever an opportunity presents itself to get rid of them.  These facilities would represent centers of leadership or potential leadership, even if some of them are children.  The notion of peace in the West Bank but not in Gaza, presented as the obstacle to a so called comprehensive peace, is a complete fallacy.  Throughout the long period of their relative silence and resignation to their fate, the lives of West Bank residents have not improved to serve as an example to the residents in Gaza and their leaders of what rewards await them if they would simply bow before their overlords, or doff the cap in the correct way like inmates were once made to do before their SS jailers.  In fact, it has worsened with the unchecked expansion of settlements, economic strangulation, and everything else that can be expected in the relationship between an elite master race occupier and their subjects.

Article 22 is particularly entertaining...

For a long time, the enemies have been planning, skillfully and with precision, for the achievement of what they have attained. They took into consideration the causes affecting the current of events. They strived to amass great and substantive material wealth which they devoted to the realisation of their dream. With their money, they took control of the world media, news agencies, the press, publishing houses, broadcasting stations, and others. With their money they stirred revolutions in various parts of the world with the purpose of achieving their interests and reaping the fruit therein. They were behind the French Revolution, the Communist revolution and most of the revolutions we heard and hear about, here and there. With their money they formed secret societies, such as Freemasons, Rotary Clubs, the Lions and others in different parts of the world for the purpose of sabotaging societies and achieving Zionist interests. With their money they were able to control imperialistic countries and instigate them to colonize many countries in order to enable them to exploit their resources and spread corruption there.

You may speak as much as you want about regional and world wars. They were behind World War I, when they were able to destroy the Islamic Caliphate, making financial gains and controlling resources. They obtained the Balfour Declaration, formed the League of Nations through which they could rule the world. They were behind World War II, through which they made huge financial gains by trading in armaments, and paved the way for the establishment of their state. It was they who instigated the replacement of the League of Nations with the United Nations and the Security Council to enable them to rule the world through them. There is no war going on anywhere, without having their finger in it.

kropotkin1951

There is lots of racism on the Israeli side.  Here is a member of the Knesset urging the mass murder of Palestians.

Ayelet Shaked wrote:

Here is what has been posted as a full translation of Shaked’s statement:

The Palestinian people has declared war on us, and we must respond with war. Not an operation, not a slow-moving one, not low-intensity, not controlled escalation, no destruction of terror infrastructure, no targeted killings. Enough with the oblique references. This is a war. Words have meanings. This is a war. It is not a war against terror, and not a war against extremists, and not even a war against the Palestinian Authority. These too are forms of avoiding reality. This is a war between two people. Who is the enemy? The Palestinian people. Why? Ask them, they started.

I don’t know why it’s so hard for us to define reality with the simple words that language puts at our disposal. Why do we have to make up a new name for the war every other week, just to avoid calling it by its name. What’s so horrifying about understanding that the entire Palestinian people is the enemy? Every war is between two peoples, and in every war the people who started the war, that whole people, is the enemy. A declaration of war is not a war crime. Responding with war certainly is not. Nor is the use of the word “war”, nor a clear definition who the enemy is. Au contraire: the morality of war (yes, there is such a thing) is founded on the assumption that there are wars in this world, and that war is not the normal state of things, and that in wars the enemy is usually an entire people, including its elderly and its women, its cities and its villages, its property and its infrastructure.

And the morality of war knows that it is not possible to refrain from hurting enemy civilians. It does not condemn the British air force, which bombed and totally destroyed the German city of Dresden, or the US planes that destroyed the cities of Poland and wrecked half of Budapest, places whose wretched residents had never done a thing to America, but which had to be destroyed in order to win the war against evil. The morals of war do not require that Russia be brought to trial, though it bombs and destroys towns and neighborhoods in Chechnya. It does not denounce the UN Peacekeeping Forces for killing hundreds of civilians in Angola, nor the NATO forces who bombed Milosevic’s Belgrade, a city with a million civilians, elderly, babies, women, and children. The morals of war accept as correct in principle, not only politically, what America has done in Afghanistan, including the massive bombing of populated places, including the creation of a refugee stream of hundreds of thousands of people who escaped the horrors of war, for thousands of whom there is no home to return to.

And in our war this is sevenfold more correct, because the enemy soldiers hide out among the population, and it is only through its support that they can fight. Behind every terrorist stand dozens of men and women, without whom he could not engage in terrorism. Actors in the war are those who incite in mosques, who write the murderous curricula for schools, who give shelter, who provide vehicles, and all those who honor and give them their moral support. They are all enemy combatants, and their blood shall be on all their heads. Now this also includes the mothers of the martyrs, who send them to hell with flowers and kisses. They should follow their sons, nothing would be more just. They should go, as should the physical homes in which they raised the snakes. Otherwise, more little snakes will be raised there.

“At a time of war, the nation under attack is allowed to punish the enemy population with measures it finds suitable, such as blocking supplies or electricity, as well as shelling the entire area according to the army minister’s judgment, and not to needlessly endanger soldiers but rather to take crushing deterring steps to exterminate the enemy,” Lior said in his opinion.

“The defense minister may even order the destruction of Gaza so that the south should no longer suffer, and to prevent harm to members of our people who have long been suffering from the enemies surrounding us,” he wrote.

Armed robbery in Gaza - Israel, US, UK carve up the spoils of Palestine's stolen gas

Israel desperately covets Gaza's gas as a 'cheap stop-gap' yielding revenues of $6-7 billion a year, writes Nafeez Ahmed. The UK's BG and the US's Noble Energy are lined up to do the dirty work - but first Hamas must be 'uprooted' from Gaza, and Fatah bullied into cutting off its talks with Russia's Gazprom.

quote:

Israel's secret gas talks

Despite repeated breakdowns in Israeli-Palestinian negotiations to exploit the Gaza Marine gas reserves, Israel's interest only accelerated.

In May last year, Israeli officials were in "secret talks" for months with the British Gas Group (BG Group), which owns the license over Gaza's offshore resources, over development of the reserves.

According to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), the Gaza Marine holds about 1.6 trillion cubic feet in recoverable gas, and "offshore Gaza territory may hold additional energy resources."

Determining the size of these additional resources requires further exploration which, however, is limited by "uncertainty around maritime delineation between Israel, Gaza, and Egypt."

Senior Israeli sources said that the Gaza gas issue was expected to come up in US President Barack Obama's talks with Israeli leaders during his visit to Israel at the time.

The Palestinians - who own the gas - were excluded

The talks also included Netanyahu's personal envoy Yitzak Molcho and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair in his capacity as Quartet (US, UK, EU, Russia) special envoy to the Middle East.

Palestinian leaders, though, were excluded from these talks due to "political sensitivities and the complex relationship between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas."

By October that year, the Financial Times reported that Netanyahu remained "very supportive" of the Gaza Marine gas project "which would see the fields exploited on behalf of the Palestinian Authority by investors led by BG Group."

If all went ahead, the fields could be producing gas by 2017, generating "$6bn to $7bn of revenues a year." An "energy industry source" cited by FT told the newspaper that:

"Israel may now see Gaza Marine as providing a useful alternative source of gas, especially at a time when its pipeline imports from Egypt have been disrupted due to unrest in the Sinai peninsula.

"Mr Netanyahu's government faces criticism and a court challenge from opposition politicians over its plans to export up to 40 per cent of natural gas produced from its own, much larger Mediterranean gas reserves.

"Israel, the industry source said, may feel that gas from Gaza would allow it to reduce its reliance on the consortium led by Noble and Delek Energy now developing Israel's Tamar and Leviathan offshore gasfields."

Of course there is. One of the reasons why the Middle East is such an intractible conflict is that both sides are filled with people utterly convinced of their own righteousness and of the other side's iniquity. There are two radically different versions of history and both israelis and palestinians have their own "national myths" that portray themselves as innocent victims.

Peace will only come when everyone acknowledges that no one is totally right and no one is totally wrong and that there will have to be some compromise.

There is lots of racism on the Israeli side.

Hamas is either a political party and/or a terrorist group - depending how you look at it - what adjective would you use to describe Hamas in view of its charter

I'm sorry..I'll rightfully retract and clarify and point the finger directly at Netanyahoo and the Likuds......Fascist oppressors..Sounds pretty evil to me.

BTW,all of Israel's enablers and cheerleaders share in the blame department. Their complicity is also evil.

A fascinating 2012 article by Nicolas Pelham for anyone wanting to understand the whole tunnel phenomenon in Gaza:

Gaza's Tunnel Phenomenon: The Unintended Dynamics of Israel's Siege

http://www.palestine-studies.org/journals.aspx?id=11424&jid=1&href=fulltext

The article has been getting some political play these past few weeks because in it Hamas officials admit the use of child labour in digging / constructing the tunnels - along with the disturbing number of work-related fatalities.

But it also provides a remarkable insight into the workings of the Gaza economiy and polity.

Israel is a State, not a people. There are Israeli Palestinians, Muslims, Christians, etc. To call Israel evil is to call the actions of a State evil. What constitutes evil is a philosophical or theological argument. Suffice it to say that the West is financing genocide. The elimination of the Palestinian people is on record in the Knesset as a goal of Israel. While the same might be said of Hamas, or other groups looking to obliterate Israel, Israel holds all the cards. They are well-funded and have more military might than could possibly be garnered by their opponents. For every Israeli death there are dozens of Palestinian deaths. Not a battle of equals. Israel specifically targets children. Gaza, Hamas, does not. It's more random. I would categorize their actions as evil, easily. Besides, as an occupied, barricaded people, what the hell would anyone expect Gaza to do?
