If the purpose of the Liberal campaign in Burnaby South is to make Jagmeet work for the seat, I suspect Lee's appointment as candidate will do the trick. But I would have to think Jagmeet is still the heavy favorite to win.

You're probably correct that Lee's purpose is to get the Liberals a respectable share of the vote and to make Singh and the NDP still have to do some work.

Does anyone have any details on this? It sounds like a nice idea that does not account for obvious logical problems. And no details mean that it cannot be judged -- or even seriously considered.
How do you determine if people *have* to pay more than 30% of their income on rent? This is not a small detail. Is he offering a plan whereby we create a housing cost for each city and use that? How would this be applied to different sized families? How do you determine if someone needs to live in a particular place and what size and quality of unit they should have?
So if a person who makes 30,000 lives in shared accomodations that cost $750/month they should get less help than a person who makes $100,000.00 but rents a luxury condo at $2600/mo? This is one of those things where the details are everything.
Or, is he suggesting that whatever people decide is right for them and the state ought to pay for a subsidy based on what they choose to rent -- then the money could go to people based on their decisions not their means or actual needs?
Sure, it may be possible to answer all this but to annouce an idea in principle that has such significant questions without including in the announcement how those questions would be addressed seems to be politically incompetent. If this was about a city benchmark like this then this is not a rental support but a regional income support based on where you live. If true then this is badly communicated, and if not it is badly conceived.

BTW options could include: regional credits based on income and dependents that take account of local cost of living, and proposing, with provinces that property taxes become more progressive -- taking th property tax increasingly off lower cost rental housing.

I would concur that housing affordability is a priority. Although how one makes housing affordable over the long term in a speculative market is one that has perplexed governments in Spain, Ireland and Greece. Massive building of government managed housing is the model that seems to be in place in many places in the world. Singapore seems to have found a solution that works for them.

I reached out to the city to see if this group is actually allowed on city hall grounds for a political rally and they are. The city actually has a policy on this and have reminded the group to follow the guidelines, in case anyone was wondering.

The party (then known as The Democratic Advancement Party) ran 4 candidates in 2015. They averaged 0.6% of the vote.

The NOW’s Jennifer Gauthier was on hand to cover the event and she reports that the yellow vests were outnumbered by the counter-protesters by a wide margin. No more than four yellow vests showed up at any given time during the rally, although with that small a turnout, I’m not sure you can really call it a “rally.”

What this sounds like a replacement for is money for social housing, which is badly needed. Social housing keeps the cost of housing down and helps keep money in people's pockets for other things they need.
