Online Lee talks about protecting the environment yet he supports the pipeline going through Burnaby so he fits in well with the two-faced Team Trudeau team

If the purpose of the Liberal campaign in Burnaby South is to make Jagmeet work for the seat, I suspect Lee's appointment as candidate will do the trick. But I would have to think Jagmeet is still the heavy favorite to win.

I agree.

Based on the new Mainstreet poll, combined with the Liberal problems with Wang, Singh has the advantage.

You're probably correct that Lee's purpose is to get the Liberals a respectable share of the vote and to make Singh and the NDP still have to do some work.

Meanwhile, the Liberals will focus on their main objective -- Outremont.

I wonder how many Canadians are aware that Trudeau’s family made their fortune from the fossil fuel industry and that Trudeau’s Grand-Father was the General Manager of Champlain Oil Products in Quebec

NorthReport

That sounds like Liberal Doublespeak for bad or failed Liberal policies and/or leadership.

That is an insane policy, with multiple angles for criticism and exploitation. Just one being: since Singh isn't receiving a paycheque these days and is now a renter in Burnaby, would he automatically qualify for a subsidy?

NorthReport

What's insane are your absurd comments but nothing is expected.

What's absurd about my comments? And where do you get off criticizing me? Let me turn it around, but with some actual basis in fact: You spam the board endlessly with mindless posts and rampant thread proliferation. In whatever over-eager rabid state you inhabit you double post incessantly (and sometimes manage to delete them and mark them "dp" - seriously dude, slow down a bit). You either give lone links with no context, or copy & paste entire articles word-for-word (including photos, bylines, etc..., which is against Rabble policy unless I'm mistaken?). Your posts often have nothing to do with the thread you drop them into, and you ignore or are rude to people who point this out to you. And whenever anyone (often NDP supporters) comes up with a logical critique of Singh or the NDP you yell "Racist!" and "Liberal!" and "Troll!" You are the most blindly partisan person on here, and if all the NDP's supporters were like you it would be enough to make me vote for Mad Max (and I've been voting NDP almost exclusively since the late 1980s).

Extremely strict rent control and/or rent subsidies are essential if working class people are going to allowed to exist in Vancouver.

Report forecasts 1.1 million population rise in Lower Mainland by 2041, requiring 500,000 new housing units

Does anyone have any details on this? It sounds like a nice idea that does not account for obvious logical problems. And no details mean that it cannot be judged -- or even seriously considered.

How do you determine if people *have* to pay more than 30% of their income on rent? This is not a small detail. Is he offering a plan whereby we create a housing cost for each city and use that? How would this be applied to different sized families? How do you determine if someone needs to live in a particular place and what size and quality of unit they should have?

So if a person who makes 30,000 lives in shared accomodations that cost $750/month they should get less help than a person who makes $100,000.00 but rents a luxury condo at $2600/mo? This is one of those things where the details are everything.

Or, is he suggesting that whatever people decide is right for them and the state ought to pay for a subsidy based on what they choose to rent -- then the money could go to people based on their decisions not their means or actual needs?

Sure, it may be possible to answer all this but to annouce an idea in principle that has such significant questions without including in the announcement how those questions would be addressed seems to be politically incompetent. If this was about a city benchmark like this then this is not a rental support but a regional income support based on where you live. If true then this is badly communicated, and if not it is badly conceived.

Is it a plan for sale rather than for use?

Then again, it is sounding like an intrusive replacement of a much more needed apporach: a basic income that is based on a real cost of living -- which would still need to account for decisions about where people live. I am not a fan of support programs that take away the agency of individuals -- I do not support food stamps or rent payments over income assistance. I also do not think replacing an affordable housing strategy that recognizes this one problem alone is wise. Do we need a different program to support people who spend too much of their income on food? Then will we debate people's food choices? Why not just address directly the cost of living in each community and what a basic income in each region ought to be?

I think when turning your back on the most simple and obvious comprehensive solutions (basic income in this case), to go with something peicemeal, at least you should put some answers on the table describing how it can address the most obvious conceptual questions with the idea.

Or are we talking about BS populism just coming from the left but with no more of an attempt at making it real than half the stuff Trump proposes for the purpose of votes rather than betterment of the people?

Singh might be able to answer this and might be able to show that it is realistic but that should have come with the announcement.

No, this does not indear me to his leadership one bit.

Sean in Ottawa

BTW options could include: regional credits based on income and dependents that take account of local cost of living, and proposing, with provinces that property taxes become more progressive -- taking th property tax increasingly off lower cost rental housing.

I do like the push for affordable units -- not seen details yet.

I would concur that housing affordability is a priority.  Although how one makes housing affordable over the long term in a speculative market is one that has perplexed governments in Spain, Ireland and Greece. Massive building of government managed housing is the model that seems to be in place in many places in the world. Singapore seems to have found a solution that works for them.

Ownership

More than 80% of Singapore's population live in HDB flats. HDB Flats in Singapore are sold on a 99-year lease agreement. The remainder are rental flats reserved for those who are unable to afford to purchase the cheapest forms of public housing despite financial support.

It is with great sadness that I report the yellow vests are not only coming to Burnaby on Saturday, but they are running a candidate in Burnaby South.

The National Citizens Alliance sent out a news release this morning that said a rally will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Burnaby City Hall. I reached out to the city to see if this group is actually allowed on city hall grounds for a political rally and they are. The city actually has a policy on this and have reminded the group to follow the guidelines, in case anyone was wondering.

If they actually do stand a candidate, he-and we can assume it will be a guy, given this crowd-will mainly take votes that otherwise would have gone to the Parti Bernier.

The party (then known as The Democratic Advancement Party) ran 4 candidates in 2015. They averaged 0.6% of the vote.

So an update on the "rally":

https://www.burnabynow.com/opinion/blogs/burnaby-counter-protesters-conf...

The NOW’s Jennifer Gauthier was on hand to cover the event and she reports that the yellow vests were outnumbered by the counter-protesters by a wide margin. No more than four yellow vests showed up at any given time during the rally, although with that small a turnout, I’m not sure you can really call it a “rally.”

What this sounds like a replacement for is money for social housing, which is badly needed. Social housing keeps the cost of housing down and helps keep money in people's pockets for other things they need. Rent subsidies are liable to wind up in the pockets of landlords in the form of higher rents.

Still waiting for the $400 annual rent subsidy that was promised by the BC NDP I know it’s coming but it would be nice to get it before too much longer

So does anyone know what the NDP policy on this coup attempt is?

Today, however, according to the National Post and NDP  foreign affairs critic Hélène Laverdière's own twitter feed that may no longer be the case.

The National Post states:

Asked on Monday to respond to fears on the left that Canada is facilitating imperialism, Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said she finds the idea difficult to justify and hers is a pro-democracy position. The NDP, which had been hitherto agnostic, clarified its own position when foreign affairs critic Hélène Laverdière said Monday she now accepts the Liberal government’s recognition of Guaido — just not how they went about it.

Meanwhile on twitter Laverdière retweeted a tweet by French President Emmanuel Macron recognizing Guaido as the legitimate president of Venezuela:

If Paladin, a supposedly informed oldtime NDP'er, is totally out to lunch on the topic of Venezuela and US ciriminal meddling in their affairs, is it any wonder the major political parties are taking the position they take??

What does Jagmeet say about the issue? Has he been excused from having to say?

The issue is Kropotkin, as you likely know, politicians of the most informed mind must sometimes choose to bite the bullet insread of taking a decent position. Be they Liberal leaders or NDP leaders.

Keep your powder dry and live to fight another day!

That's not meant to excuse the chickenshit bastards with nothing at stake and nothing to lose by taking the high road! Speaking of Paladin, if it looks like a duck, ...............................

Disgusting!

A logical conclusion. Singh, Trudeau, and Scheer read Babble daily, wait to see what Paladin thinks about international politics, then make their policy decisions accordingly.

Brilliant strategy

Dont show professional courtesy by running a candidate against the leader of another political party, don’t have a chance of defeating the NDP leader in Burnaby South, so devise a brain-dead story that you want him to win the by-election How gullible do Liberals think Canadians are?

I was confused by this anyway -- isn't the yellow vest group in Canada coming from the same place as Bernier's party? Or maybe they are the same thing but East-hating and French-hating so are divided by that? Maybe they didn't want to draw support from the Bernier bile candidate? In any case there is a bigot party on the ballot so we don't have to feel sorry for them.

They're running a candidate in York-Simcoe so I think it was just ineptitude. Speaking of splitting the vote in Burnaby, there's a former B.C. Green candidate running as an Independent on an anti-refugee platform:

This candidate is himself an immigrant, having lived in Canada since 2011. (No offence intended by noting this fact.)

Yeah I don't understand why they are going all out to try to win. But any loss in Burnaby-South will be overshadowed by a win in Outermount.

cco

Before the election: Outremont's only a Mulcair seat, not an NDP seat! It naturally belongs to the Liberals! We don't even have to campaign to take it back!

After the election, if Bendayan wins: Our win proves Quebec's completely rejected the NDP and everything it stands for! The NDP experiment in Quebec's over!

If Sanchez wins: Well, Outremont was always a safe NDP seat. The NDP winning two seats it held before is meaningless.
